8 Easy Houseplants to Bring Some Green Into Fall and Winter

While some enjoy the crisp and cool weather of autumn and winter, others can sometimes struggle with the lack of greenery after the leaves fall. Houseplants are a great way to incorporate something growing back into your home all year and can be not only rewarding, but really warm up the interior of your home! Read on for eight beginner-friendly options!

1. Pothos

Truly some of the easiest houseplants to care for, pothos is beginner-friendly with a maximum return of beautiful foliage. These beauties come in several stunning variations and provide dozens of design options. Drape them over bookshelves, use Command Strips to have them crawl across your wall; the world is your oyster! These flexible plants can also thrive in a variety of light levels—even rather dim rooms, which makes them great for bathrooms even.

2. Philodendron

Philodendrons are another low-maintenance offer that looks especially great in hanging baskets. Similar in appearance to pothos, philodendrons are pretty drought-tolerant and can grow in low and medium indirect light conditions. They’re also known for being great air purifiers!

3. Herbs

Who wouldn’t want fresh homegrown herbs right in their kitchen all year round? If you’re blessed with a bright kitchen and a good window that receives bright, direct light for most of the day then you’ll be cooking with fresh herbs regularly in no time at all. You can also get helped along with a grow light if your lighting isn’t the best! Chives, parsley, mint, thyme, rosemary, basil, oregano, and cilantro are all great options.

4. Succulents

Now don’t be intimidated; succulents aren’t as temperamental as people make them out to be! If you have a bright, sunny windowsill and can mostly resist the urge to water it, you’ll have a thriving and happy plant. We’re not kidding, depending on the size of a succulent, you might only need to water once a month!

5. Spider Plant

Spider plants are a fun option for those wanting not only an interesting looking plant, but a fun experiment too! Spider plants are the plants that keep on giving (literally!) as they send offshoots that you can easily propagate. They make excellent hanging plants and when they are happy, they flower and send out offshoots prolifically. Avoid placing a spider plant in direct light as it will cause the leaves to burn.

6. Snake Plant

Known as the plant of steel, snake plants might be the top recommended plants for people without a green thumb. Even the most prolific houseplant killers can find a friend in snake plants. Not only can they tolerate drought and low light conditions, but they also come in many interesting and spectacular varieties!

7. ZZ Plant

Also known as ‘Zanzibar Gem’, the ZZ plant has been a houseplant loved by people for years now. Tolerant of many light conditions and a fast grower, ZZ plants are another great option for those who struggle to keep a houseplant happy! These plants grow from rhizomes, similar to snake plants, so they hardly ever need to be watered regularly. Set it and (almost) forget it!

8. African Violet

For those who want more than just green in their house, look no further than the African violet, which offers a variety of beautiful and sweet little blooms year-round. These compact and petite houseplants are also great for those without much space and come in several beautiful colors!
