Fertilizing Guide
Reasons to Fertilize Your Plants and When to Do It
Correct soil nutrient deficiencies.
Help establish newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials.
Encourage new growth, blooms and fruit.
Enhance color and appearance.
Early Spring (March/April)
For in ground planting: Apply an organic-based (Espoma) or slow release (Osmocote) fertilizer around the plant as described by the manufacturer. Typical rule of thumb is 1 TBSP per 3-Gallon pot.
For annuals and container gardens with combinations of perennials and annuals: Apply a water-soluble fertilizer such as Southern Ag or Miracle Grow weekly per the manufacturer’s instruction. Continue through summer till fall.
Fall (After 1st Frost)
Apply to evergreen and cool season vegetables that continue growth into the winter.
Do not apply fertilizer to plants that go dormant in the winter. This can potentially damage the plant.
